February Newsletter - Friday, March 03, 2006

February was another busy month.  We spent it getting our household ready for another member.  Ryan worked hard changing the office upstairs into a nursery, and setting the office back up in the basement.  We finished the taxes before the office move (we weren't sure if the old computer and paperwork would survive the move) and Ryan purchased and built a new computer at the same time.  We find ourselves using the basement a lot more now that the computers are down there.  The old computer has been 'refreshed' so it doesn't crash like it used to, and will now be our browsing/email/Zach game machine. Zach doesn't know about the game part (the baby will give him a Blue's Clues game -- his first) but we think he'll be excited.

Work has been busy for both of us, but especially for Sarah.  Other engineers/managers at Seagate want to utilize her time before the 12 week maternity leave starts.  Lots of last minute problem solving meetings!  Plus getting all the loose ends wrapped up or transferred to others in her group to continue.

Doctor visits are weekly now for Baby checkups.  February has been one long 'labor month', culminating in 3cm dilation/60% effacement/Baby at -1 station.  Sarah recalls walking around like this for several weeks with Zachary, so this does not mean that Baby is soon to be born.  Sleep is already in short supply as Baby thinks it needs to be active at night.  The great debate at our house is what to name the poor child as we can't keep calling it 'Baby' until it is 30.

Zachary has been astonishing us with his interest in letters, spelling, and sounds.  He has taken to sounding out letters in words we see while around town, which makes for some interesting conversations.  The English language has a lot of rules that are hard for 2 engineering parents to explain to a 4-year-old.  Nothing is consistent!  (you try explaining silent 'e').But he takes it all in and rolls with it.  He loves to practice writing his letters and is always asking us to spell words for him.  His fine motor skills are really improved, which also shows in his coloring ability.  He's been getting along better at daycare, and has renewed enthusiasm for his gymnastics class.  Our baby is growing up!
